Fairhope Alabama was established in 1892 on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay based on the single tax theory developed by Henry George, who advocated no taxes other than a single land tax. When Fairhope was founded the original settlers gave the city a “Fair Hope of Success” and the name was born. Fairhope still operates under the Single Tax Theory which makes it the largest single tax colony in the country. That ideal has given Fairhope a village setting that makes it one of the best hidden treasures on the Gulf Coast. The quaint downtown district is full of boutiques, shops, and restaurants all individually owned which gives it a feel unlike any other. The rich beauty, scenic landscape, and friendly environment make it a wonderful place to get away and relax for a leisurely weekend or a lifetime. As natives and life long residents of Fairhope I can assure you that there is not a more beautiful place on Earth.
